Reigning National Champions Kwansei Gakuin met perennial Kanto powerhouse Keio today in the kick-off (for KG) of the Spring College football season. Although spring games have no affect on actual league standings, they are hard fought contests for both regional and school pride.

In front of a crowd of 2,200 at Kobe’s Oji Stadium, the visiting Unicorns jumped out to a 10 point first quarter lead on a one-yard Yotsutsuji plunge for a touchdown, followed by a 28 yard Hirota FG.

The Fighters, playing on what for all intents and purposes is their home field, replied with TD runs by Yamamoto and Yamaguchi to edge in front.

Keio hit back before the break with a 14-yard Kato TD reception and went in at halftime 17-14 up.

After a hard fought but scoreless third quarter, which saw Keio miss a long field goal, the fourth quarter belonged to the national champs, who ran up 17 unanswered points to take this intersectional rivalry going away 31-17.

The game, despite being little more than a preseason contest was completive and spirited, with the starters for both sides playing virtually the entire game.
